Dennis Prager was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 2, 1948 to Hilda Prager (and Max Prager). His siblings and he were raised in a Modern Orthodox Jewish family. Joseph Telushkin, a Brooklyn Yeshiva of Flatbush student, was his friend.

Dennis graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in History and Middle Eastern Studies.

Later, he joined the Colombia University School of International and Public Affairs. The University of Leeds was also his home. He did not finish a graduate degree and he quit academic pursuits.
